An agreement between the Council of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region and the Ministry of Equipment and Water has set a financial envelope of up to one billion dirhams to implement a vast program of construction and maintenance of rural roads at the level of the region.

The agreement aims to improve the economic attractiveness of the territories, attract investment and reduce social and territorial disparities.

The agreement, which was approved by the regional council by an absolute majority during the ordinary session last July, covers the period 2024-2027, as it aims to improve rural road axes, facilitate access to a group of isolated communities and villages and improve road connectivity between the regions and cities of the region.

The financial envelope for the implementation of the projects programmed under the agreement will be mobilized, under the supervision of the region’s mandate, jointly between the Council of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, in the amount of 700 million dirhams, and the Ministry of Equipment and Water, which will mobilize financial credits of up to 300 million dirhams.

The financial cost of the agreement covers the completion of technical and geotechnical studies, the expropriation of land needed for the construction of the road and the work to transform the networks (water, electricity, communications), in addition to the cost of the road construction work. A regional supervision, monitoring and evaluation committee will be created to monitor and implement the agreement, chaired by the governor of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region.

It is worth noting that this project is part of the regional council’s 2022-2027 regional development program, as well as government programs aimed at developing the Kingdom’s road network, preserving the important road balance and providing the rural community with basic infrastructure equipment and its upgrading.
