The opposition judge in Cairo decided to renew today Thursday the detention of popular singer Saad Al-Saghir, accused of possession of narcotics and attempting to smuggle drugs from the United States to Egypt, via Cairo International Airport.
The details of the incident go back to Cairo airport detectives, in coordination with anti-drug agents and customs officers, who arrested Saad Al-Saghir as he was returning from America on an EgyptAir plane, in possession of nine packs of electronic cigarettes containing marijuana.
Saad Al-Saghir stated in his confession to investigating authorities that he did not know that these cigarettes contained a narcotic substance, stating: “I thought they were regular cigarettes and vapes, and I did not know that they were drugs that are banned in Egypt.”
The singer added, tearfully: “By God, I didn’t know it had illegal drugs in it. Someone brought it to me, by God, and I didn’t know it had marijuana in it, believe me, I’m innocent.
The investigating authorities decided to keep the young man in detention for 4 days pending the investigation, before returning and renewing his detention today.
