French and Kenyan Presidents Emmanuel Macron and William Ruto announced, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, that the next Africa-France summit will take place in 2026 in Nairobi, for the first time in a non-EU country. -French speaking
Launched in 1973, these summits are held alternately in France and in an African country, but this is the first time that an edition is planned in a non-French-speaking state, a sign of French diplomacy which is increasingly turning towards other partners on the Continent, while it is in crisis in several of its former colonies, particularly in the Sahel.
This summit therefore, to which all heads of state and government of the African continent will be invited, will therefore contrast with the last one organized in Montpellier, France, in 2021, where Emmanuel Macron favored civil society and which therefore took place without African leaders.
The themes of the Nairobi meeting will be the climate challenge, “environmental preservation”, “reform of the international financial architecture” and the promotion of “inclusive multilateralism” which takes Africa better into account.
The Kenyan and French presidents “are strongly mobilized” on these subjects, particularly within the Paris Pact for the people and the planet launched in 2023 and which was the subject of a follow-up meeting last Wednesday in New York.
