Eurostat, the EU statistical office, noted in a press release published on the occasion of the International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day, celebrated on September 29, that the EU generated 59.2 million tonnes food waste, including edible and inedible parts, .

According to the European body, household waste represents 54% of all food waste, or the equivalent of 72 kg per inhabitant. The remaining 46% was waste generated upstream of the food chain: 19% by the manufacturing of food and drink products (25 kg per inhabitant), 11% by catering (15 kg per inhabitant), 8% in commerce retail (11 kg per inhabitant) and 8% in primary production (10 kg per inhabitant).

Globally, around 13.2% of food produced is lost between harvest and retail, while around 19% of total global food production is wasted in households, food service and commerce detail, according to the UN.

This year, International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day 2024 will highlight ‘the critical need’ to fund efforts to reduce food loss and waste, contribute to achieving climate goals and promotion of the 2030 sustainable development agenda.
