The French National Assembly on Tuesday rejected a motion of censure against the government of new Prime Minister Michel Barnier.
The text, tabled by the left-wing alliance of the New Popular Front (NFP), received 197 votes, far from the absolute majority of 289 votes needed to bring down the government.
The motion of censure had no chance of succeeding, in the absence of the support of the National Rally and its allies (142 deputies) who had already previously announced that they would not vote for censure.
Mr. Barnier denounced an “a priori” motion of censure from the left.
“You informed me that before I even opened my mouth, before I formed the government, before I presented a general policy declaration, you were going to censor me. (…) It is in some way an a priori motion of censure,” the Prime Minister affirmed in front of the deputies.
