USA: Biden reacts and bans robotic phone calls using artificial voices

Fake phone calls using President Joe Biden’s voice to discourage New Hampshire residents from voting in the Democratic primary have prompted state officials to open an investigation into voter suppression, sparking calls from activists in favor of stricter restrictions on generative AI tools or an outright ban on “robocalls”.

The investigation concerns a “possible illegal attempt to disrupt” the vote. In October, Mr. Biden signed an executive order aimed at improving the regulation of AI regarding its impact on security, justice and the labor market.

The text recommends developing tools to facilitate the control of content generated by AI.

In this regard, FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized that in the future, state attorneys general will have new tools to crack down on these scams and ensure that the public is protected from fraud and misinformation.

Also, and as part of a measure aimed at combating the evolution of scams enabled by this technology, the American telecommunications regulator has banned robocalls using voices generated by artificial intelligence (AI) programs.

“Bad actors are using AI-generated voices in unsolicited phone calls” to extort people, pose as celebrities and mislead voters.
