The South African presidency has announced the death of the former minister and first indigenous governor of the country’s central bank, Tito Mboweni.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said: “We have lost a leader and one of our own who served our nation as an activist, economic policy innovator and defender of workers’ rights. “As governor and finance minister, he placed great importance on fiscal discipline and economic transformation. »
Tito Mboweni is 65 years old. Mboweni was an anti-apartheid activist in the country and became the first Minister of Labor after the end of the apartheid regime.
The ANC said Mboweni helped develop the country’s post-apartheid labor laws.
