Morocco is currently striving to develop its water capacities to meet the growing needs for drinking water, in the agricultural and industrial sectors, as well as to face the challenges of drought and climate change.

In this context, the construction and expansion of six large seawater desalination plants along the Kingdom’s coasts are being completed.

These six stations, whose construction is being accelerated according to royal directives, aim to produce 718 million cubic meters of water per year, of which 441.3 million cubic meters will be devoted to the supply of drinking water, 150 million cubic meters cubic meters for agricultural irrigation and 127 million cubic meters for drinking water. meters for industrial use.

It should be noted that all stations will be 100% reliant on renewable energy.

The “Alma Diyalna” platform revealed new information about these projects, which are:

1. Umkrio Seawater Desalination Plant: It will produce 200,000 cubic meters per year to provide drinking water to the Umkrio region and is expected to be completed before the end of 2024.

2. Sidi Ifni desalination plant: It will produce 3.2 million cubic meters per year to meet drinking water needs and is expected to be completed soon.

3. Dakhla desalination plant: It will produce 37 million cubic meters per year, including 30 million cubic meters for agricultural irrigation and 7 million cubic meters for drinking water. It is expected to be completed in 2025.

4. Extension of the Jorf Lasfar desalination plant: It aims to achieve a production of 203 million cubic meters per year, of which 88 million cubic meters are intended for drinking water, 75 million cubic meters for industry and 40 million cubic meters to agriculture. irrigation. It is expected to be completed in 2026.

5. Extension of the Safi desalination plant: It aims to produce 175 million cubic meters per year, including 93 million cubic meters for drinking water, 52 million cubic meters for industry and 30 million cubic meters cubes for agricultural irrigation, and is expected to be completed in 2026.

6. Seawater desalination plant in Casablanca: It will be the largest in Africa and aims to produce 300 million cubic meters per year, including 250 million cubic meters for drinking water and 50 million cubic meters for agricultural irrigation. The first phase is expected to be completed in 2026, with a daily production capacity of 548 thousand cubic meters, which will increase to 822 thousand cubic meters per day by mid-2028.

These projects are part of the Kingdom’s efforts to strengthen water security and meet growing needs while relying on clean energy.
