Real Madrid on Sunday condemned the racist behavior of several of its supporters towards FC Barcelona players during the Clasico, played on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu and won by the Catalan club 4-0.
“Real Madrid strongly condemns any type of racist, xenophobic or violent behavior in football and sport, and deeply regrets the insults uttered last night by some supporters in one of the corners of the stadium,” said the Madrid club in a press release. .
He claims to have “opened an investigation to locate and identify the perpetrators of these deplorable and despicable insults, in order to take appropriate disciplinary and legal measures”.
For its part, the Spanish Football League, which condemned the “racist insults and gestures” received by Catalan players, announced that it will file a complaint, affirming its commitment to “eradicate all racist and hateful behavior inside and outside stadiums”.
Despite the measures taken by La Liga and increasingly severe sanctions from clubs and authorities, Spanish football still cannot eradicate racism in stadiums.
Last Thursday, four people involved in a campaign targeting Brazilian international Vinicius Junior were arrested for inciting hatred just before the Madrid derby, after calling on Atlitico supporters to come to the match wearing masks so they could insult without being able to be identified.
