Morocco is at the forefront in terms of ecological development and the promotion of renewable energies, thanks to its rich potential and its innovative energy policy, underlined, Thursday in Rimini, eminent experts in the field of green technologies.

”The Kingdom is establishing itself as an African leader in the field of energy transition, in the sense that it has developed its own plan for solar and wind energy, hydropower, as well as green ammonia.” ‘, underlined Abdessamad Faik, research professor at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and director of the Laboratory of Inorganic Materials for Sustainable Energy Technologies (LIMSET), during the Ecomondo 2024 exhibition, which is held in Rimini from November 5 to 8.

Giving an overview of the development plan for renewable energies in Morocco, Mr. Faik, who moderated a panel as part of the 4th edition of the African Forum on Green Growth, on the sidelines of the Ecomondo show, emphasized, between others, on the national project for the development of green hydrogen and gigafactories.

He also highlighted the importance of training in the installation of platforms and training on a national and African scale for tomorrow’s managers.

While welcoming the cooperation with RES4Africa Foundation (Renewable Energy Solutions for Africa), which offers training to develop new professional skills in the energy sector, Mr. Faik highlighted the Moroccan training program as a model to follow in national universities and those of African countries.

“Two projects are in progress. This concerns the production of green hydrogen intended for export to Europe, and the OCP project aiming to produce 1 million tonnes of green ammonia by 2027, and 3 million “green ammonia by 2032,” he said.

For his part, the head of the Department of Cooperation, Communication and Technological Monitoring at the Institute for Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN), Mouhcine Benmeziane, praised the quality and level of cooperation between Morocco and Italy in terms of training in the energy sector, highlighting the importance of the energy center of excellence that the Kingdom will host.

This center, which is part of the Mattei Plan, will share skills and know-how with other countries on the African continent, he said, believing that it “will make the difference by giving birth to a new generation of experts able to create energy solutions.”

”Morocco has invested enormously in renewable energies, in accordance with the High Guidelines of King Mohammed VI, establishing an inclusive and sustainable development model which will benefit the entire African continent,”, for his part, indicated Mr. Khalid Atlassi, counselor at the Moroccan embassy in Italy.

He also noted that with the objective of producing 52% of national electricity from renewable sources by 2030, Morocco demonstrates that accelerated economic growth can go hand in hand with an ambitious ecological strategy.

Thanks to the King’s vision, Morocco is also a pioneer in the field of the circular economy, an essential pillar for sustainable growth, he said, recalling the launch of several initiatives to recycle and recover waste, promote bioeconomy, and encourage responsible management of resources.

Steps, he continued, capable of strengthening the Kingdom’s partnership with the European Union, while establishing solid partnerships with several African countries in the sectors of sustainable agriculture, access to water and renewable energy.

The 4th African Forum on Green Growth is initiated by Ecomondo in collaboration in particular with the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, and the Mission Structure for the implementation of the Mattei Plan.
