After he fell from a merchant ship, a grueling search began for the young Vietnamese man until he was found by chance by a fishing boat.
A sailor miraculously survived after falling from a cargo ship 8 kilometers off the coast of Australia, with his wallet, ID card and cigarettes attached to him.
The crew member fell from the cargo ship Double Delight off the coast of Newcastle on Thursday evening and swam through the night and most of Friday.
Until the young man in his twenties was spotted for the first time by fishermen on Friday afternoon and taken aboard their boat.
One of the people on the boat was a doctor and he treated the young man, a Vietnamese national. “He was very exhausted and very cold, his pulse was weak, very pale and we were worried about him,” the doctor told Nine News.
Border Force is currently investigating whether the man fell overboard intentionally. Earlier on Friday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) was informed by Newcastle’s port chief that a member of the ship’s Singapore-based crew had fallen into the water.
