TP Mazembe of the DRC began its journey in the CAF Women’s Champions League in El Jadida, winning its first match against the University of the Western Cape (UWC) of South Africa with a score of 2- 0 yesterday Saturday.
Despite a timid start to the match, the TPM Corbelles were able to stand up to the continuous attacks of the South African team, which is making its debut in the final phase by presenting itself as the COSAFA champion.
From the first minutes, the South African players exerted strong pressure with rapid attacks, often creating difficulties for Mazembe. Most of UWC’s attacks were led by the talented Amogelang Motau in midfield, whose precise passes were repeatedly aimed at Ntombifikile Ndlovu, although she lacked accuracy in her shots at times.
Upon resumption, Mazembe returned to the field with a better organized team, capable of countering UWC’s offensives. Mazembe opened the scoring thanks to a well-placed strike from Lacho Marta in the 62nd minute from short distance, which surprised Thandeka Ngcobo. This goal disorganized the South Africans, who lost control of the match and were punished again in the 77th minute. On a well executed cross by Marta, now the passer, Merveille Nanguji consolidated the victory for Mazembe with a precise header, thus securing the three points.
This result places the Congolaises team at the top of Group A, pending the match later between the host team, AS FAR, and the Aigles de la Médina.
