This is the sixth meeting between teams from the COSAFA and UFOA regions. In the five previous confrontations, all COSAFA teams have triumphed.
Of the previous five finals encounters between the COSAFA and UFOA teams, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies played four matches, while the remaining encounter saw Zambia Green Buffaloes triumph 4-0 over Determine Girls in the 2022 group stage.
In the last five finals between COSAFA and UFOA, COSAFA teams have scored 12 goals while their UFOA rivals have only scored one.
Both teams started this final phase with a defeat. Four teams have already managed to advance through the group stages after losing their first match: Malabo Kings in 2021, Simba Queens and Bayelsa Queens in 2022, as well as AS FAR in 2023.
A loss for either team will result in their elimination if the other match ends in a draw.
UWC Ladies (South Africa)
They lost their first match against TP Mazembe with a score of 0-2.
UWC Ladies failed to score a single shot in their opening match. Out of 16 final tournament encounters involving South African teams, this is only the second time a team from that region has failed. failed to take a shot on target, the first being Sundowns’ 0-0 draw against AS FAR in their final group match of 2021.
UWC Ladies are the first South African club to suffer defeat in a group match at the finals, before Mamelodi Sundowns lost to FC Masar.
UWC Ladies goalkeeper Thandeka Princess Ngcobo made four saves in their first match and faced six shots in total. She stopped Mazembe’s first four shots before conceding the next two.
Ngcobo is one of three goalkeepers in Group A to make four saves in the opening matches.
Simnikiwe Mhlakaza made the most clearances of the match against Mazembe, making four clearances.
Molatelo Kobo created two chances in the defeat against TP Mazembe, the most for a UWC player.
Koketso Mamabolo won nine duels, the joint-most number in the match against TP Mazembe, out of a total of ten duels played.
During the defeat against Mazembe, UWC made a total of 276 passes, including 135 in the opposing camp.
Eagles of the Medina (Senegal)
The Aigles de la Médina lost their first match 3-0 against AS FAR.
They had four shots on target in their first match, the most for a team that failed to score in Group A.
Faced with seven shots against AS FAR, goalkeeper Khady Faye made four saves.
Aicha Fall played 18 duels in the opening match of the Aigles de la Médina and won 9, the most among her teammates.
The only team from the UFOA region to lose their first match of 2022 while reaching the semi-finals is Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens, who suffered a 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns before winning against TP Mazembe and Wadi Degla, allowing them to finish third.
During their opening match against AS FAR, the Aigles de la Médina players engaged in 98 duels, winning 49%, and participated in 11 aerial duels with a success rate of 54.5%.
