The CAF Awards 2024 will honor a new winner of the prestigious African Player of the Year award during a ceremony planned in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 16. This winner will be the last to receive a prize celebrating the greatest talents on the continent since 1970.
This year’s ceremony will be held at the Palais des Congrès, with a scheduled start at 7:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. GMT / 8:00 p.m. Cairo Time / 9:00 p.m. East African Time).
One of the highlights of this evening will be the announcement of the Best African Player, among the five nominees still in the running.
Ivory Coast and Brighton & Hove Albion attacking midfielder Simon Adingra is among the contenders for the title, alongside Borussia Dortmund’s Guinean international striker Serhou Guirassy and Moroccan right-back Achraf Hakimi, playing at Paris Saint-Germain. Atalanta’s hard-hitting winger Ademola Lookman is a darling of Nigerian fans, while Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is fueling hopes that his stellar performances for South Africa in the CAF AFCON TotalEnergies Côte d’Ivoire 2023 will lead him to consecration.
The African Player of the Year Award was first established by France Football magazine 54 years ago, before being taken over by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 1992.
In 1970, Malian international Salif Keïta was the very first to receive this title, while playing for Saint-Étienne in France. Before that, he belonged to Stade Malien, who were beaten in the final of the first CAF Champions Cup in 1965. At Saint-Étienne, he managed to win three Ligue 1 titles in a row from 1968 to 1970, thus forging a legendary reputation in this flagship club of French football.
He scored 42 goals in the 1970-71 season, when Saint-Étienne finished in second place behind Marseille, before joining the latter in 1972.
Ibrahim Sunday (Ghana & Asante Kotoko) won the award in 1971, and Chérif Souleymane (Guinea & Hafia) the following year.
The 90s were dominated by the championship leaders. Abedi Pele of Ghana triumphed three years in a row, from 1991 to 1993, and George Weah before becoming President of Liberia was crowned in 1995, becoming the first African player to win the Ballon d’Or.
A legendary football duo hold the most African Player of the Year titles. Former Cameroonian international Samuel Eto’o, crowned in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010, shares this distinction with former Ivorian midfielder Yaya Touré, crowned in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Touré stands out in being the only player to have won this award four consecutive years.
Among current players, Egyptian Mohamed Salah has won the award twice, as has his former partner at Liverpool, Sadio Mané.
