The 4th international conference on the media and the law opened on Friday in Béni Mellal, with the participation of an audience of academics, journalists and representatives of journalistic training institutions in Morocco and in Arab countries and sub -Saharan Africa.
Organized by the journey of excellence in journalism and media of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences of Béni Mellal in partnership with the National Press Council and other partners, this conference constitutes a platform for dialogue intended to promote the research and sharing of knowledge around the contemporary issues with which the information media in the digital age is faced.
This international event, organized in celebration of World Press Freedom Day under the theme “Media and law: challenges and opportunities in the digital age”, intends to highlight the role of research and knowledge sharing in promotion, respect and protection of rights, in an environment constantly evolving on the national and international levels.
Opening the work of this conference, the coordinator of the journey of excellence in journalism and media of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences of Béni Mellal, Driss Jabri, highlighted the importance of the theme of this edition which intervenes in a context where the kingdom is preparing to host major international demonstrations, hence the importance of endowing the media field of journalistic skills capable and worthy of these major events.
The conference also aims to explore the digital changes in progress, by questioning the limits of the technological revolution and its impact on the media, in the light of advances in artificial intelligence, he explained, noting that particular attention will be paid to the legal dimension deemed essential to supervise the practice of journalism alongside the ethical principles framing the profession.
For his part, the president of the provisional commission for the management of affairs of the press and publishing sector, Younes Moujahid, stressed that the participation of the Council in this meeting testifies to the interest in the digital transformation of the media and to the legal framework which ensures its organization.
“Our main role as an organ of self-regulation bringing together journalists and publishers and other categories is to offer a service to society and to the public,” he said, noting that the self-regulatory organization is not only an interprofessional structure bringing together only professionals in the sector, but also includes various bodies, institutions and personalities, including the university.
He emphasized the importance of opening up to the university sphere through research and academic and professional training, recalling that the recommendations resulting from this conference will benefit academics, publishers, journalists and the whole of society.
The inaugural conference of this fourth edition of this conference was led by Mr. Mohamed Idrissi Alami Machichi, ex-minister of justice and former director of the ISIC, under the theme “Media and law: the challenges of new communication technologies”.
The work of this conference will be articulated around the relationships between media and law, explored under a plurality of angles, among which are freedom of expression and national legislative frameworks, interactions between digital journalism and legal systems, the proliferation of false news and disinformation, copyright in the digital era, as well as laws relating to the protection of personal data.
This international meeting will also be punctuated by scientific workshops, led by Moroccan and foreign experts, who will look at legal challenges linked to information media, while drawing up an inventory of journalistic training within Moroccan universities and sketching the horizons of its evolution.
Practical workshops, specifically designed for students in the course of excellence, will be devoted to new synergies between journalism and generative artificial intelligence, in line with the most recent technological advances in the field.
