With a cost of 12.8 billion dirhams, signature for the creation of a large industrial unit for the production of batteries for electric cars.

The head of government, Aziz Akhannouch, chaired this Thursday, June 6, 2024 in Rabat the signing ceremony of a strategic investment agreement between the Moroccan government and the Sino-European group GOTION High-Tech, leader in the field of electric mobility.

Under this agreement, a large industrial unit, or “GIGAFACTORY”, will be created with an integrated ecosystem for the production of batteries for electric cars in Kenitra. This unit will be the first of its type in the Middle East and North Africa region, thus strengthening Morocco’s leadership in the automotive industry and energy transition, thanks to the strategic and wise vision of King Mohammed VI.

This investment agreement was signed by Mr. Abdelouafi Laftit, Minister of the Interior, Ms. Nadia Fettah, Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, Ms. Fatima-Zahra Mansouri, Minister of National Territorial Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and Urban Policy, Mr. Younes Sekkouri, Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, employment and skills, Mr. Ryad Mezzour, Minister of Industry and Trade, Ms. Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Mr. Mohcine Jazouli, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government, responsible for ‘Investment, convergence and evaluation of public policies, Mr. Fouzi Lekjaa, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, responsible for the Budget, as well as Mr. Li Zhen, Managing Director of the Sino- European GOTION High-Tech, in the presence of Mr. Ali Seddiki, Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development.

For the creation of this large industrial unit, the Kingdom has placed its trust in GOTION High-Tech, leader in the electric battery sector, of which the German group Volkswagen is one of the main shareholders, in order to develop an integrated production project of batteries for electric cars with a capacity of up to 20 GWh and an investment cost of 12.8 billion dirhams. This project is expected to create 17,000 direct and indirect jobs, including 2,300 highly qualified jobs.

The first phase of this investment will make it possible to develop the group’s industrial activities in Morocco and establish an integrated ecosystem for the production of batteries for electric cars with a final capacity of 100 GWh and a total investment cost estimated at 65 billion of dirhams.

GOTION High-Tech Group has already made significant progress in Europe and the United States, where it has established 12 large industrial units (GIGAFACTORY) over the past two years, meeting the growing global demand for electric mobility. The choice of this group for our country demonstrates its confidence in Morocco as a privileged destination and a leading investment platform, particularly in terms of industrial ecosystems which promote the creation of jobs and added value.

Under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty the King, Morocco has become, over the last twenty-five years, a reference platform in the automotive and aeronautics industry, allowing our country to integrate closely into the global value chains.

Today, thanks to the far-sighted royal vision, the Kingdom of Morocco is working to strengthen its position on the international scene in high value-added professions such as electric mobility, in order to capitalize on the Kingdom’s achievements and support the transition of its automotive industrial ecosystem to electric, while strengthening wealth creation for the benefit of citizens.
