The administration of the Oudaya local prison in Marrakech denied, on Saturday, the allegations made about the death of an inmate at the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center.

In a clarification in response to false allegations made by an association claiming to work in the field of human rights regarding the death of an inmate at the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Marrakech, the prison administration explains that a inmate carrying out community service fainted on May 29, 2024 while trying to unblock one of the sewers, adding that a similar case of fainting of another inmate was recorded.

The latter tried to intervene to rescue the first inmate, specifies the establishment, adding that the incident was considered a work accident and reported to the competent public prosecutor’s office.

According to the update, the two detainees were transferred to the clinic of the penitentiary establishment to receive first aid, before being transported to the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Marrakech. One of them returned to the establishment following the improvement in his health, while the second was placed under medical surveillance before he died on Friday June 7. The prison administration thus informed his family and relevant parties of the death.

The allegations made by the president of the said association, a former prisoner at the establishment, are nothing more than simple attempts aimed at harming the image of the establishment and the reputation of its staff, knowing that during the period of his detention, he enjoyed normal detention conditions like the other residents, underlines the clarification.

The prison administration had already interacted with certain media outlets and presented clarifications regarding the work accident that occurred in the establishment, but the president of the association ignored these clarifications and persisted in conveying his allegations , which reflects the resentment that this former prisoner feels towards the administration and the staff of the penitentiary establishment, concludes the update.
