Since April 2023, more than 500,000 Sudanese have crossed the border into eastern Chad, including 380,000 children like Roumaiza, 14, and her sister Samaha, 12. The eldest testifies: “We came here without any news of my father and my brother was killed. On the road, I received a piece of shrapnel which embedded itself in my leg. Sometimes I hurt and can’t sleep. »
Roumaiza and her family arrived in a region where food is in short supply: “There is nothing to eat here, except when we receive aid or food distributions. » UNICEF teams are mobilized on the ground to meet the vital needs of children and their families.
In March 2024, Mahombi fled the violence with her 16-month-old son and found refuge in Kanyaruchinya, in North Kivu province. “When we arrived here, we had nothing to eat or drink. This is why my son suffered from malnutrition,” she explains. Thanks to the screening campaign organized by UNICEF and its partners, Bakara received appropriate treatment quickly.
