HIBAPRESS – Follow-up
The Spanish National Meteorological Agency has placed the Valencia region in eastern Spain under a red alert due to heavy rains, warning of an "exceptional danger." The agency confirmed via the "X" platform that the warning includes the provinces of Tarragona, Castellón, and Valencia during Sunday evening and Monday, with expectations of floods and flash floods.
The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, called on residents to exercise "the utmost caution," emphasizing adherence to the instructions of civil protection and emergency services. For its part, the Valencia municipality announced the closure of schools, libraries, parks, markets, and cemeteries on Monday.
Residents of the coasts also received a warning message on Sunday evening, urging them to be "extremely vigilant" with the start of the rain wave starting from eight in the evening on the northern coasts of Castellón, and from four in the morning on Monday on the coasts of Valencia, according to emergency services.
It is worth mentioning that the deadly October 2024 floods were caused by torrential rains associated with what is known as the "cold drop," an isolated low-pressure system in the upper layers of the atmosphere, common in the autumn of the Spanish Mediterranean coasts, and its effects are exacerbated by climate change and intensive urban expansion in coastal areas.
