The Hamas movement announced on Friday evening its agreement to the proposal of US President Donald Trump, calling for the release of all living Israeli hostages and the handover of the bodies of the deceased, as part of a comprehensive plan for the future of the Gaza Strip.
The movement affirmed in an official statement its "immediate readiness to enter into negotiations through mediators to discuss the details of the initiative," praising Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, and the efforts made by President Trump. Hamas also reiterated its agreement to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian body of independents (technocrats), to be formed with national consensus and with Arab and Islamic support. As for issues related to the future of Gaza and the rights of the Palestinian people, the movement clarified that they would remain hostage to a unified national position based on international resolutions. Trump had given Hamas until Sunday evening to reach an agreement, which he described as the "last chance," warning of the outbreak of "hell" against the movement's fighters in case of rejection. Trump's plan, which he presented last week during the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly, includes an immediate ceasefire, a complete exchange of prisoners between Hamas and Israel, and a gradual Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, in addition to disarming Hamas and forming a transitional government under the supervision of an international body. Trump presented his plan initially to leaders from Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, Qatar, and the UAE, before Qatar and Egypt officially conveyed it to Hamas last Monday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously announced his support for the initiative alongside Trump at the White House, considering that it achieves Israeli goals from the war. It is worth mentioning that Israel launched a large-scale war on Gaza after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which – according to Israeli statistics – resulted in the death of 1,200 people and the capture of 251 others. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health in Gaza confirms that the Israeli attack has since led to the death of more than 66,000 Palestinians.
