Celeste Arantes, Pelé’s mother, died at the age of 101 in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. The sad news was announced by the son of world football champion Pelé in a post on Instagram.

The woman was from Tres Coracoes, Minas Gerais, and had three children: Pelé, Jair (Zoca) and the youngest, Maria Lucia, who was responsible for her care.

According to Globo’s g1, the woman had been hospitalized for eight days. Shortly before dying, Pelé, at the age of 82, paid tribute to his mother’s hundredth birthday on November 20, 2022, the opening day of the World Cup in Qatar.

“Goodbye grandmother rest in peace”. With this simple greeting, loaded with extreme pain, one of Donna Celeste’s grandchildren confirmed the death of the old lady, born in 1923, who had survived the death of her son, Pelé, which occurred only a a year and a half earlier.

The sad event was later confirmed, still on social networks, by the son of the world football champion, Edinho, while Santos FC immediately sent other messages of condolence.

As of now, his family has not provided details on the cause of death. Donna Celeste, as she was known in Brazil, was born in 1923 in Três Corações, a town in the state of Minas Gerais, where at the age of only 17 she gave birth to Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pele.

According to Brazilian media, including Rete Globo, her state of health had recently deteriorated to the point that she had been hospitalized for more than a week.
