18 people died following a massive landslide in northern India, after a bus carrying dozens of passengers was buried under rocks in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, according to Indian media on Tuesday.
Rescue teams were able to save three passengers, while others are believed to still be trapped. The bus was carrying about 30 to 35 people, without confirming the exact number yet.
The collapse is likely due to heavy rains that lasted for a long period, causing a whole side of a mountain to collapse.
The Himalayan states of northern India witness seasonal rains, which are necessary for agriculture, but often lead to deaths and extensive landslides. Last week, heavy rains in Darjeeling caused landslides and floods that killed 36 people, destroyed more than 500 homes, washed away parts of roads, and destroyed about 5% of tea farms.
