HIBAPRESS
The South Korean military announced on Sunday that a soldier from North Korea defected to the South after crossing the heavily fortified demilitarized zone separating the two countries.
The military explained, in a statement, that South Korean guards were able to detect the soldier's movements and detain him immediately after crossing the border, indicating that he will be investigated to determine the motives for his defection. Such defections are rare and dangerous given the strict security fortifications on the border, as most of those fleeing North Korea prefer to escape through China or other countries. This is the first case of a North Korean soldier defecting since last August.
