HIBAPRESS – Shafiq Anouri
Hundreds of protesters belonging to the organization "Arran," the youth wing of the left-wing "CUP" party, attacked on Monday the event called by the far-right "VOX" party in the city of Sabadell, Barcelona, which aimed to denounce the continued teaching program of the Arabic language and Moroccan culture.
The Spanish website "eldebate" revealed that the "VOX" event was supposed to be held in front of the Juan Salarès i Blanes school institute, in the Campamor neighborhood, where dozens of the right-wing party's activists and supporters gathered, chanting "Stop Islamization Now," to denounce the fact that nine public schools in Sabadell offer Arabic lessons. The source explained that "VOX" activists and sympathizers were unable to hold this event because "Arran" protesters, along with a large number of Moroccan youth, according to their claim, in addition to members of local left-wing associations, resorted to violence and attacked the event attended by deputies and councilors from the right-wing party, using "stones, bottles, and eggs." The same source added that the Spanish police deployed extensive reinforcements in the surrounding streets and carried out several interventions after the protesters pelted the security elements and other parties, without recording any serious injuries. Later, neighborhood associations in the south of Sabadell issued a statement condemning that the "VOX" event was spreading "hate speech, Islamophobia, and social division." In contrast, the far-right party expressed its regret at the prevention of its activity, amidst chants such as "Get out," and "Get out, fascists, from our neighborhoods."
