After 5 days of the break-in at the Louvre Museum in Paris, part of the museum's valuable jewelry collection was transferred to the Bank of France for security reasons.
Radio "RTL" reported, citing identical sources, that the pieces were transferred under police guard to the vaults of the nearby French Central Bank. "BFM TV" also confirmed the information.
The Louvre Museum was evacuated and closed last Sunday morning after four masked thieves broke into the Apollo Gallery, which displays the remaining jewels of the French Crown.
The thieves broke two display cases and stole eight pieces of jewelry that were owned by French queens and empresses, estimated to be worth around 88 million euros (102 million dollars).
According to the "RTL" radio report, the jewelry was deposited in a heavily guarded vault 26 meters underground, where about 90% of France's gold reserves are stored.
