The deputy chairman of the Mauritanian party "Al-Sawab," Ahmed Ould Obeid, praised the contents of the speech of His Majesty King Mohammed VI last Friday, describing it as "positive and open."
Mr. Ould Obeid stated in a statement to the Moroccan News Agency that His Majesty the King called for a "sincere fraternal dialogue with Algeria," stressing Morocco's keenness to find a solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue, in a way that preserves the face of all parties, and "no victor or vanquished." The Mauritanian official clarified that Resolution 2797 issued by the UN Security Council represents a very important step for the Arab Maghreb Union, stressing the need to revive this union in a time of strong economic blocs. He pointed out that the UN resolution reinforces the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, and is considered a "good start to understanding," stressing that ending the conflict over the Sahara will enable the activation of the Arab Maghreb Union with its five countries, and give the image of Morocco as an influential economic and social force at the regional and international levels. Ahmed Ould Obeid stressed the need for the political class and the Maghrebian elites to contribute to enhancing rapprochement and understanding between the brothers, which would positively reflect on stability and development in the region.
