A short video clip posted by Nigerian international player Alex Iwobi sparked widespread controversy on social media after he appeared inside the accommodation hotel of his country's team in Morocco. It was interpreted by some as an expression of his dissatisfaction with the accommodation conditions.
In this context, informed sources confirmed that the qualifying play-off matches for international tournaments are organized according to a special system, which makes each national federation responsible for the logistical arrangements related to its delegation, including choosing the hotel and accommodation and bearing all the expenses arising therefrom. Based on this system, the Moroccan authorities have nothing to do with choosing the Nigerian team's accommodation hotel, as the Nigerian Football Federation is responsible for determining all the details related to the accommodation of its players and technical staff. The data indicate that the choice of the modest hotel in which the Nigerian team stayed may be the result of an internal decision by the Nigerian Federation as part of reducing expenses, which makes the matter a matter concerning the Nigerian side only, without any responsibility on the host country. It is worth noting that Iwobi later clarified via his social media account, confirming that the video was not intended to criticize the hotel or any party, explaining that it was just a passing clip from his room window, which was misinterpreted.
