HIBAPRESS – Rabat

Morocco celebrates World Diabetes Day on November 14, 2025, coinciding with global celebrations for which the World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Federation have chosen the theme: "Diabetes and Well-being at Work".

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection stated in a statement that this day aims to highlight the challenges faced by people with diabetes in their workplaces and ways to promote healthy work environments that support their well-being. The Ministry adds that, according to the International Diabetes Federation, the disease currently affects about 589 million people worldwide, about 10% of adults, and the number is expected to reach 853 million by 2050. Work-related factors, such as lack of physical activity, stress, and an unbalanced diet, play a major role in this increase. As for Morocco, the results of the 2017-2018 National Survey of Common Risk Factors for Non-Communicable Diseases indicate that the prevalence of diabetes among adults is 10.6%, or about 2.7 million people, while pre-diabetes is recorded in about 10.4% of the population, half of whom are unaware of their condition, which delays their care. In addition, annual health expenditures related to diabetes exceeded 1.5 billion dirhams in 2022, according to data from the National Health Insurance Agency. The Ministry of Health and Social Protection is working to implement an integrated program for the prevention, detection, and care of diabetes, in partnership with various institutions and associations. Awareness activities during the period from November 14 to December 15, 2025, include awareness sessions about the risk factors for type 2 diabetes, screening for people most at risk of the disease in primary health care institutions, in addition to therapeutic education sessions for people with diabetes, and awareness and follow-up activities in the professional environment in cooperation with companies, as well as mobilizing local and regional media to disseminate prevention messages and promote healthy lifestyles. Celebrating World Diabetes Day is an opportunity for the Ministry to join international efforts in raising awareness of the challenges of this chronic disease, renewing its commitment to promoting prevention and care for those affected, supporting health and well-being at work, and contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to the health and well-being of all.
