US President Donald Trump announced that he intends to stop immigration from "Third World countries," a day after an Afghan citizen shot two National Guard soldiers in Washington.
Trump wrote on social media, "I will permanently stop immigration from all Third World countries to allow the American system to fully recover." He also threatened to cancel "millions" of accepted applications granted during the term of his predecessor, Joe Biden, and "deport anyone who does not provide additional value to the United States." Trump also clarified that he would put an end to all federal aid and grants to non-American citizens and would deport any foreigner who poses a security risk or "does not align with Western civilization." His angry post, which he concluded by wishing Americans a happy Thanksgiving, represents an escalation in the anti-immigration policy he is pursuing in his second presidential term, which was characterized by a campaign to deport large numbers of immigrants. He said, "We will strive to achieve these goals in order to bring about a significant decrease in the number of illegal and disorderly residents." This post was issued after the announcement of the death of Sarah Bikstrom, one of the two National Guard members who were shot a day earlier near the White House, while the other soldier "is fighting for his life." The US administration announced after the attack that it would review the permanent residency status of immigrants from 19 countries, including Afghanistan, as well as Haiti, Iran, and Venezuela.
