Tunisian authorities arrested today, Thursday, Ahmed Najeeb Chebbi, one of the most prominent figures of the Tunisian opposition for more than half a century, to execute a 12-year prison sentence issued against him on charges of conspiring against President Kais Saied. His arrest comes after the arrest of other opponents on the same charges.
Chebbi, 82 years old, had appeared in media statements before his arrest, confirming that he was waiting for the execution of the sentence, indicating that his house was under security surveillance in preparation for his imprisonment. After the sentence was issued, Chebbi announced that he was going to prison "with a clear conscience," calling on Tunisians to escalate protests "to protect democracy, which Kais Saied is trying to restrict," and also demanded that the various political forces unite in the face of what he described as "the authoritarian approach." His son, Louay Chebbi, said that "the arrest of Professor Najeeb Chebbi will not stop the countdown to the hour of freedom."
