Associations and representatives of taxi professionals in the city of Rabat expressed their deep shock and condemnation after the death of a large taxi driver, last Friday, following being run over by someone practicing transportation via unlicensed applications in front of the new bus station in the city.
These associations confirmed that the tragic incident, which shook the family of urban transport professionals, comes as a result of the growing phenomenon of unregulated secret transport, which has become a direct threat to the safety and security of drivers and citizens alike. The associations, including the "Nidaa Al-Mustaqbal" association, the Democratic Union of Transport and Multimodal Logistics Odtl, the "Karama for Taxi Drivers" association, and the "Taxi Com Rabat" cooperative, stressed that these criminal behaviors reveal the fragility of the control over illegal transport, holding the supervising authorities fully responsible for not taking the necessary measures to limit the spread of unlicensed applications despite repeated warnings over the years. Professional representations affirmed that the continuation of this situation opens the door to arbitrary practices that endanger the lives of professionals and citizens, and harm social stability within the city. In this context, the associations announced their intention to take militant and escalating steps if the laxity continues, with the aim of defending the lives and dignity of the drivers, and these steps will include unified militant programs in coordination with various professional and trade union bodies. They also called for opening an urgent investigation and arranging legal penalties against the perpetrator and everyone who allowed the continuation of this chaos, demanding that the security and provincial authorities activate strict monitoring of all forms of secret transport to protect professionals, public order and road safety, stressing that defending the lives and dignity of the drivers has become a professional and ethical duty that cannot be reversed.
