The Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Al-Tawfiq, highlighted today, Sunday, in Rabat, the causes of the need for the Maliki school of thought, especially in light of societal changes and current developments.
Al-Tawfiq explained in a speech during the opening session of this symposium, organized by the General Secretariat of the Supreme Scientific Council, under the title "The Maliki School of Thought in Light of the Development of Moroccan Society," that the need for the school of Imam Malik is evident in a number of considerations, especially in the chapter on defining the Imam's approach and its impact on people's lives, due to its objectives in protecting people from ignorance and preventing extremism.
The Minister pointed out that Imam Malik proposes choices in the jurisprudence of transactions, as his students throughout the ages sought to serve his school of thought at the level of transactions, noting that Imam Malik established the foundation for building a great pillar for teaching wisdom through Maliki jurisprudence with its rules, rulings, and interpretations.
He also touched on the Imam Malik's focus on the urgent need to raise awareness of the necessity of simplifying religious sciences for the public, explaining that this matter is inferred from the name of his book "Al-Muwatta." He pointed out that he was ahead of his time in giving importance to work, which is an approach that scholars have utilized over the centuries by adopting the concept of public interest, stressing in this regard the urgent need for this concept in light of new developments and societal transformations, and this is reflected in the widespread use in the world of the term "public interest."
He recalled Imam Malik's firm positions on scientific humility and acceptance of differences, and considering freedom as a condition for religiosity, considering that these positions make Imam Malik a role model for scholars in integrity, effort, and service to religion, as it explains people's interest in him.
Al-Tawfiq praised the holding of this scientific symposium, calling for the publication of its works and their translation into French and English, in order to convey them to Muslims in African countries that adopt the Maliki school of thought.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Scientific Council, Said Chbar, highlighted that this symposium approaches the Maliki school of thought as one of the religious constants of Morocco, based on the Council's understanding of the necessity of serving and clarifying these constants, noting that the Council continues its efforts in this regard by holding other symposia that shed light on these constants.
Chbar emphasized that holding this scientific symposium comes in activation of one of the decisions of the Committee for Studies and Scientific Research in the thirty-fifth session of the Supreme Scientific Council.
The work of this scientific symposium is distributed over several axes, including, in particular, "The Maliki School of Thought and Combining Opinions: The Rules Framing the School's Openness to Other Schools," "The Maliki School of Thought and Family and Society Issues in the Modern Era," "The Maliki School of Thought in Practical Jurisprudential Life in Morocco: A Re-examination of New Transactions," and "The Specificities of the Maliki School of Thought in Morocco in What Has Been Practiced."
