HIBAPRESS – Follow-up
Moroccan YouTuber Yahya Khadir sparked a wave of controversy and anger on social media, after posting a video that many considered offensive and fueling racist discourse, just before the start of the African Cup of Nations.
The video shows Yahya Khadir with a Nigerian content creator, before another person intervenes and directs a direct racist remark to the latter, saying: "Get rid of the black plastic, you brought them." What is most criticized is that the Moroccan YouTuber posted the clip as is, without any editing or clear condemnation of what was said, which was interpreted as promoting or being lenient with unacceptable racist discourse. The circulation of the video sparked angry reactions from a large number of activists, who considered that publishing such clips, especially at this sensitive time preceding the African Cup of Nations, harms the image of Moroccans and undermines the values of coexistence and openness that have always distinguished Moroccan society. A number of followers demanded that content creators take responsibility for their moral obligations, and not exploit controversial scenes for views, especially when it comes to offense and racism, stressing that sports and continental demonstrations should be an opportunity for rapprochement between peoples and not for igniting strife.
