The Greek coast guard today, Thursday, conducted search operations for a child who went missing off the coast of Marmakonisi Island in the Aegean Sea, after finding 13 migrants on the small, uninhabited island, according to the local ANA news agency.
At the same time, 39 migrants were rescued from a rubber boat south of the island of Crete, and were transported to the town of Kaloi Limenes, without details about their nationalities. The operation involved the use of two coast guard boats and a helicopter from the air force, while the island is located off the Turkish coast, which is a starting point for many migrants seeking to reach Europe. Migrants continue to attempt dangerous crossings between Turkey and the Greek islands, or from Libya to Crete, where drowning incidents are frequent.
