at the start of August: this frightening heat

HIBAPRESS-RABAT-WHO Heat poses a significant environmental and occupational health risk. Heat stress is the leading cause of weather-related deaths; it can exacerbate underlying diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, asthma and mental disorders, and increase the risk of accidents and transmission of some infectious diseases. Heat stroke is a medical emergency with a high case fatality rate. The number of people exposed to extreme heat is increasing exponentially due to climate change in all regions of the world. Heat-related mortality among people over 65 years of age has increased by approximately 85%. Studies show that approximately 489 000 heat-related deaths occurred each year, 45% of which occurred in Asia and 36% in Europe (2). In Europe alone, an estimated 61 672 excess heat-related deaths occurred. Severe heatwaves can lead to high acute mortality; in Europe, for example, the event caused 70 000 deaths. In the Russian Federation, a 44-day heatwave caused 56 000 excess deaths. Vulnerability to heat depends on both physiological factors, such as age and health status, and exposure-related factors such as occupation and socioeconomic conditions. The negative health effects of heat are predictable and largely preventable through specific public health and multisectoral policies and interventions. WHO has published guidance for public health institutions to identify and manage extreme heat risks. Addressing climate change, combined with comprehensive preparedness and risk management, can save lives today and in the future.
