French President Emmanuel Macron announced today, Monday, during a cabinet meeting that France "does not support and does not agree" with the way the United States used to arrest Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and transfer him to its territory, according to what the government spokeswoman, Maud Bregeon, stated.
Bregeon explained that Macron described Maduro as a "dictator" and that his departure represents "good news for Venezuelans," in a position that combines the rejection of Washington's method of carrying out the operation and the reference to the negative nature of Maduro's rule in Venezuela. The French President was criticized, especially from the left, for not directly condemning the US method of arrest in his first reaction to the incident. The United States launched strikes on targets in Venezuela early Saturday and arrested Maduro and his wife and transferred them to New York, where he is scheduled to appear before the judiciary on drug-related charges. Washington considers Maduro an illegitimate ruler since the announcement of his victory in the 2018 elections, which it said witnessed widespread fraud. American prosecutors say that Maduro was the leader of a criminal network that includes Venezuelan political and military officials, who conspired for decades with drug trafficking groups and organizations classified by the United States as terrorists, to supply thousands of tons of cocaine to American territory.
