HIBAPRESS – Abdellatif Baraka
Recent rainfall has revealed the fragility of the infrastructure within the wholesale vegetable market in the city of Inezgane, after several of its facilities turned into pools of water and mud, hindering the movement of traders and customers, and disrupting the normal flow of the largest commercial space of its kind in southern Morocco.
A tour inside the market observed the difficulty of accessing a number of corridors, due to the blockage of water drainage channels and the absence of regular maintenance, which made it very difficult for vehicles and trucks to enter and exit, and directly affected the pace of commercial transactions. Traders in the market expressed their anger at the current situation, considering that what happened was not the result of the moment, but rather the result of years of neglect and the absence of the necessary care for this vital facility, despite its economic standing and its pivotal role in supplying cities and regions of the south with vegetables and fruits. Professionals confirmed that the rains were only a revealing factor for structural imbalances, most notably the weakness of the sanitation network, the choking of the channels, and the absence of proactive interventions by the Inezgane Municipal Council, which turned the market into a space that is difficult to work in during every winter season. The traders demanded the need to expedite a comprehensive repair of the water drainage channels, and the adoption of a regular program for maintenance and cleaning, in order to preserve the safety of professionals and the quality of services within the market, warning that the continuation of the situation as it is threatens economic activity and increases the suffering of thousands of families associated with this vital facility.
