Lawyers in Morocco went on a national strike today, Tuesday, leading to a near-total paralysis of the courts in a number of cities.
This protest movement comes in response to the draft law on advocacy prepared by the Ministry of Justice, which lawyers consider an infringement of the basic principles of the profession. Representatives of the lawyers confirmed that the new law threatens the independence and rights of lawyers, stressing the need to reconsider some of its provisions to ensure respect for professional rules and preserve the achievements of the profession. The strike includes all judicial operations, which led to the suspension of sessions and the postponement of file dates, amid calls from lawyers for urgent dialogue with the concerned authorities.
