Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch revealed that 61 Moroccan cities are now slum-free, thanks to a coherent approach that has proven effective in eliminating informal settlements in several large cities.
Speaking this afternoon during a monthly question session at the House of Representatives, Akhannouch devoted the discussion to the subject of “urban planning and housing policy and its impact on economic dynamics, social and community development.” He affirmed that the government he leads continues to strengthen projects and public interventions to address the problem of substandard housing and accelerate the completion of the “Cities without slums” program, with the aim of creating fair, sustainable and stimulating urban areas, while fully respecting the architectural and aesthetic particularities of Moroccan cities.
Akhannouch added that the government plans to implement a five-year program for the period 2024-2028 to accelerate the fight against substandard housing and permanently eliminate shantytown neighborhoods for the benefit of 120,000 targeted families. This program is based on direct financial support as an incentive mechanism to address shantytown housing, while pursuing an approach of rehousing and upgrading real estate units within the framework of a partnership between the public and private sectors.
