Authorities in Mali arrested a person who presented himself on social media platforms as a fortune teller, after he promoted the expectation that his country's team would win the African Cup of Nations held in Morocco, in exchange for financial donations, before being accused of fraud.
This arrest came after local sources confirmed that the person in question was able to collect more than 22 million African francs, equivalent to about 39 thousand dollars, based on his promises related to the team's path in the continental tournament.
The man, known as Senayago, had linked Mali's team winning the title to the provision of financial contributions from followers, but the team left the competition on Friday from the quarter-final round after losing to Senegal with a goal to nil.
Following the exclusion, a number of angry people gathered in front of the person's house, before police officers intervened and removed him from the place to avoid exacerbating the situation.
In this context, the detainee was placed in custody with the Electronic Crimes Combat Unit, according to what was confirmed by two photographers who were working with him and later visited him.
An official in the Electronic Crimes Combat Department confirmed in a statement to Agence France-Presse that claiming to know the unseen constitutes an act punishable by law in Mali, indicating that his arrest would have been difficult if the team had continued its journey in the tournament amid the atmosphere of enthusiasm that accompanied the African Cup of Nations.
For his part, a content creator close to the person in question explained that the latter, who is mainly known for his political activity, suddenly turned to presenting himself as a fortune teller, and was able to collect large sums of money in a short time.
