HIBAPRESS – Casablanca
Civil and associative activities in the city of Berrechid have demanded that the local authorities and the municipal council intervene to change the names of a number of alleys and streets that bear the names of cities belonging to the "neighboring country".
These activities considered that the continuation of these names is no longer in line with the general national consciousness nor with the political and regional changes that the region is experiencing, stressing that the public space should reflect positive symbols that enhance national belonging and pride in Moroccan identity. The same sources explained that a number of residents expressed their displeasure with these names that date back to previous periods, considering that they no longer carry any cultural or historical significance that serves the city or its residents, but have become a source of resentment and rejection, especially in light of the repeated hostile behavior from the eastern neighbor towards Morocco. Berrechid activities demanded the launch of national names or historical symbols and prominent Moroccan figures that reflect the values of unity and pride in the collective memory.
