Media sources and Algerian activists reported that Dr. Djelloul Salama was arrested last Friday evening, against the backdrop of his recent statements regarding the Ghar Jbilet project and what he described as the "Turkish mafia."
Algerian activist Said Bensdira confirmed the news, based on his own sources, indicating that Salama is still in detention and has not yet been presented to the public prosecutor. Bensdira explained that the case may take a long time, due to the absence of a specific charge at the present time, which makes the outcome of the case unclear. Dr. Salama had sparked widespread controversy with his statement that the Ghar Jbilet project had failed, and that the financial losses incurred by Algeria amounted to 5 to 6 billion. He added that if the project had been limited to 3.5 billion only, the recovery of capital would have taken about 50 years, which observers considered to be statements that upset the responsible authorities in the country.
