24 people died and 2302 others were injured, 68 of them seriously, in 1736 traffic accidents recorded within urban areas during the week from January 19 to 25.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security attributed the main causes of these accidents, in order, to drivers' inattention, failure to yield the right of way, excessive speed, pedestrians' inattention, failure to maintain a safe distance, lack of control, changing direction without signaling, changing direction improperly, failure to stop at the "stop" sign, driving in the wrong direction, driving on the left side of the road, failure to stop at the red light, drunk driving, and improper overtaking. Regarding monitoring and deterrence operations in the field of traffic and movement, the same source explained that the security services were able to record 43,779 violations, prepare 6,670 reports referred to the Public Prosecution, and collect 37,109 reconciliation fines. The statement indicated that the amount collected reached 8,312,525 dirhams, while the number of vehicles placed in the municipal impound lot was 4,596, the number of documents withdrawn was 6,670 documents, and the number of vehicles that were stopped was 541 vehicles.
