The Regional Director of Agricultural Investment for the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, El Mahjoub El Harach, confirmed today, Friday, in Mechraa Belksiri, Sidi Kacem Province, that the local authorities and relevant services are in a state of maximum mobilization and continuous field presence to take the necessary measures to protect citizens and property, following the significant rainfall the region witnessed, which led to a rise in the water level of the Unit Dam.
El Harach explained, in a statement to the Moroccan News Agency, that the dam's water level has reached a filling rate of nearly 87 percent, which necessitated the start of the dam's water release process to reduce pressure and avoid any uncontrolled flooding, indicating that the water flowing through the Sebou River towards the Atlantic Ocean requires vigilance and careful monitoring. In the context of the technical measures taken, the regional official revealed that starting yesterday, Thursday, at 3 p.m., water discharges began at a rate of 250 cubic meters per second, before this flow was increased this morning to reach 500 cubic meters per second. He added that the competent authorities are closely monitoring the water level at the "Belksiri Bridge," where the current height has reached 8 meters, noting that the level of alert and warning is set at 10 meters, which is the level that, if exceeded, could lead to the flooding of agricultural lands and neighboring villages. He stressed that the local authorities and all officials are present in the field to monitor this situation and take all the necessary proactive measures to protect the residents of the villages adjacent to the Sebou River, as well as to secure livestock and agricultural lands, with the aim of mitigating the severity of potential damage that may result from the rising water level. El Harach concluded that these measures come in anticipation of any emergency and to ensure the safety of citizens and their property in light of the current weather conditions in the Gharb region.
