HIBAPRESS
The city of Lille, northern France, has witnessed widespread protests by firefighters in recent days, with hundreds of elements participating, expressing their anger at the deteriorating working conditions and the severe shortage of human resources. Protesters raised slogans criticizing the increasing professional pressure, considering that the current situation threatens their safety and the quality of rescue services provided to citizens.
The “beard ban” decision ignites anger
These protests came after the implementation of new internal instructions that prohibit growing a beard while working, on the grounds that it affects the sealing of breathing masks. The decision was considered unjustified and imposed without consultation by a number of firefighters, who confirmed that beards were not previously an obstacle to performing their duties, and that focusing on them hides deeper problems within the sector.
Promises of calm and anticipation for implementation
In the face of escalation, the local administration of fire and rescue services announced its readiness to review the decision related to beards, with promises to increase the number of workers and improve working conditions. Despite these steps, firefighters are still awaiting the translation of the promises into concrete measures, warning of a return to protests if the situation remains as it is.
