US President Donald Trump announced new positions on the Venezuelan oil file, revealing features of a flexible policy based on economic interests and openness to international partnerships, while confirming that the relationship with Venezuelan leaders is "good" at the present stage.
Trump explained that his country will move towards selling Venezuelan oil, while retaining a portion of its revenues, while at the same time indicating that Venezuela will get the largest share of these revenues. This statement reflects, according to observers, a remarkable shift in the American approach towards Caracas after years of tension and sanctions. In a related context, the US President revealed that India has reached a new agreement that allows it to obtain Venezuelan oil instead of Iranian oil, in a move that reflects the reordering of the energy supply map in New Delhi, and indicates a decline in reliance on Tehran in favor of other alternatives. Trump also expressed his welcome to China, confirming that Washington does not rule out the possibility of reaching a "great agreement" that allows Beijing to obtain Venezuelan oil, within the framework of broader economic understandings that may include multiple files. These statements open the door to a new phase in the global energy market, where American interests intersect with major economic powers around the exploitation of Venezuelan resources, amid questions about the repercussions of these moves on geopolitical balances and oil prices globally.
