The Moroccan Association for the Defense of Consumer Rights, operating under the umbrella of the Moroccan University for Consumer Rights, has called on citizens to avoid food waste during the upcoming month of Ramadan, urging the adoption of responsible consumption behavior based on rationalizing purchases and respecting the actual needs of families, in order to preserve purchasing power and food security.
The association clarified, in a statement made by Ali Shtour, the association's president, to the newspaper "HIBAPRESS," that Ramadan witnesses a concerning increase in food waste compared to the other months of the year, attributing this mainly to unbalanced consumption behaviors, where fasting encourages some consumers to engage in random buying driven by desire rather than need, in addition to the weak consumer culture among a large segment of citizens. Shtour pointed out that Ramadan, which is supposed to be a month of worship, health, and discipline, turns for some into a season of excess and waste, in contradiction with its values, warning that this behavior constitutes an economic burden on families and the state, especially concerning essential materials such as bread, flour, and imported wheat in hard currency. Based on the provisions of Law No. 31.08 concerning consumer protection, the association emphasized the need to combat food waste, calling on citizens to establish a conscious consumer culture that reflects the true values of Ramadan.
