Former Moroccan international Medhi Benatia announced on Sunday, February 15, 2026, his resignation from his position as Sporting Director of the French club Olympique Marseille, confirming that he had actually submitted his resignation on Monday, the 9th of February.
Benatia explained, in a post published on his Instagram account, that since joining the club, he worked "with his heart and with one concern, which is to return Olympique Marseille to the place it deserves," pointing out his good knowledge of the club's intricacies and the extent of the passion that distinguishes it. He added that the team is still in the race to achieve its goals this season, whether by competing for a place in the Champions League or seeking to regain the French Cup, despite some disappointing results and difficult scenarios. However, he admitted the existence of a general climate characterized by dissatisfaction and increasing tension, expressing his regret for the occurrence of a "rift" within the club's environment. Benatia confirmed that he had submitted his resignation officially, not as a mere suggestion, based on his conviction that the club's interest takes precedence over everything, and that he does not want his presence to be an obstacle to the progress of work or the development of the sports project. He said that after deep thought, he took responsibility and decided to end his cooperation with the club on February 9. The former international concluded his statement by emphasizing that he is leaving, convinced that he has done his best professionally, regretting his inability to calm the atmosphere surrounding the group, and calling on the fans to continue supporting the team, which he believes has all the ingredients to achieve its goals.
