A court in South Korea today, Thursday, sentenced former President Yoon Suk-yeol to life in prison, against the backdrop of imposing martial law in 2024.
Yoon Suk-yeol was accused of conspiring with the former defense minister and others to incite unrest with the aim of undermining the constitution by illegally declaring martial law in the absence of a war or a similar national emergency. The prosecutor's office had previously demanded the death penalty for Yoon Suk-yeol, knowing that the minimum possible penalty in such a case is life imprisonment. The court also sentenced the former defense minister, Kim Young-hyun, to 30 years in prison, on charges of participating in a rebellion related to the imposition of martial law declared by former President Yoon Suk-yeol, in December 2024.
