A senior Iranian official said that Iran and the United States still disagree on the scope and mechanism of lifting sanctions imposed on Tehran, in exchange for imposing restrictions on its nuclear program, according to Reuters.
The official explained that his country could seriously consider proposals that include exporting part of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, reducing its purity, in addition to establishing a regional union for uranium enrichment, provided that its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes is recognized. He added that a new round of talks is scheduled for the beginning of March, indicating that these discussions may pave the way for reaching a temporary agreement, if the two parties succeed in narrowing the gap between their positions. Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi stated on Friday that he expects to prepare a draft counter-proposal within days after the recent nuclear talks with Washington. In contrast, US President Donald Trump indicated that he is considering the option of carrying out limited military attacks against Iran. The Iranian official stressed that Tehran will not give up control of its oil and mineral resources, but he indicated the possibility of participation of American companies as contractors in oil and gas projects inside the country, if appropriate understandings are reached.
